Aggressive Language in Literature: A Pragmatic Approach

Aggression is a negative form of an anti-social behavior. It produced because particular reason, desire, want, need, or due to the psychological state aggressor. injures others physically psychologically. Aggressive behaviors in human interactions cause discomfort and disharmony among interlocutors. The paper aims identify how aggressive language manifests itself data under scrutiny terms pragmatic paradigm. Two British literary works are data; namely, Look Back Anger by John Osborne (1956), Birthday Party Harold Pinter (1957). This endeavors answer question represented literature pragmatically? hoped be significant linguistic studies that it clarifies aggression displayed communications linguistically. Qualitative quantitative analyses conducted verify findings. ends with some concluding remarks, most important which are: insulting, belittling, ridiculing threatening prevalent speech acts; simile, hyperbole, metaphor repetition appear Grice’s maxims breaching while use taboo words, calling names, abusive words impoliteness strategies distinguished data.
